Q: What made you decide to be a nurse?
A: I became a nurse because I have an affinity for helping people. I know it sounds cliche, but to be a nurse, you have to really want to do it. It’s not for everybody.
Q: What is your name, and where do you work?
A: My name is Bessie, and I'm a nurse in New Jersey.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
A: I don't do direct patient care anymore. However, my day-to-day actually deals with training clinicians on how to use certain types of medical equipment.
Q: What do you wish that people outside of healthcare knew/understood about nurses?
A: I would say that nursing definitely is a fine balance between a work of art and a work of heart. You have to be totally there for it. Nursing does have its challenges, but it also has its rewards. And nursing is flexible, and there are so many instances in which a nurse can be a nurse without necessarily having to take care of patients per se.
Q: What do you think your superpower is?
A: I think my superpower is just being able to be myself — to be me. It allows me to remain calm under pressure, knowing that my main priority is to take care of the people around me and impact the lives around me.
Q: Can you tell us about a moment or story that reminds you why you love being a nurse?
A: I love to be a nurse because of my team around me. Not only the nurses but the doctors, clinicians, everybody. We all work together to create an impact and make sure that we're doing what's right for the people whose lives are in our hands.
